4/2/2023 0 Comments Video diary therapy![]() Self-monitoring is ubiquitous across CBT, with “self-monitoring procedures… described and recommended within most empirically supported treatments” (Korotitsch & Nelson-Gray, 1999). Clients are likely to need support and training to complete self-monitoring records accurately. Discrimination and recording are skills that need to be learned and honed. It also means that – through documentation of specific events – additional detail or context can be included and analyzed, improving the client’s understanding of their symptoms, as well as the sequence and process by which they occur. Creating a record makes discrimination an explicit and conscious process that can be reviewed and analyzed. Recording consists of documenting occurrences (usually through a written record). ![]() For many clients, bringing attention and awareness to specific thoughts, feelings or emotions will be novel and difficult, but improving clients’ awareness of their symptoms and behavior is a critical component of CBT. Self-monitoring is comprised of two parts – discrimination and recording (Korotitsch & Nelson-Gray, 1999).ĭuring discrimination, the client is trained to bring their awareness to target phenomena by identifying and noticing when they occur. It is part of a wider practice of empiricism and measurement that is integral to CBT (Persons, 2008), and it functions as both an assessment method and an intervention (Korotitsch & Nelson-Gray, 1999 Proudfoot & Nicholas, 2010). Self-monitoring is a practice in which clients are asked to systematically observe and record specific targets such as thoughts, body feelings, emotions, and behaviors. To support clients with self-monitoring, we have outlined below a number of best practices that can be followed. the introduction of cognitive restructuring or behavioral experiments).Īlthough self-monitoring is conceptually fairly simple, it is often challenging for clients to conduct effectively (Korotitsch & Nelson-Gray, 1999). measuring the frequency and intensity of intrusive thoughts over the course of therapy) as well as readiness for different stages of a treatment intervention (e.g. Self-monitoring can provide a simple means to track client progress (e.g. The process of self-monitoring can help clients better appreciate the links between situations, thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and their responses. One aim of CBT is to help people to understand how what they think and do affects the way they feel. For example, a depressed client might be asked to record information about situations where their mood felt particularly low, a client recovering from an addiction problem might record what they were doing and thinking just prior to using substances, or a client suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder might complete a diary to record details of their trauma flashbacks. It is a form of data-gathering in which clients are asked to systematically observe and record specific targets such as their own thoughts, emotions, body feelings, and behaviors. Self-monitoring is a technique which cognitive behavioral therapists almost always teach their clients. 4/2/2023 0 Comments Iota definitionThe 1971 full-length edition Oxford English Dictionary is quite disappointing in this regard: it doesn't include a meaning along the lines of "something worthless or trifling" at all. ![]() But again, this interpretation does not seem to take into consideration the 1830s instances of hooter as iota, nor does it deal with the chronological evidence that "not care a hooter" seems to be roughly 30 years older than "not care a hoot." ![]() This treatment of definition 2 of hoot as a noun suggests that it, like the owl cry and the amusing thing or person, originated as a descriptive sound. Lighter, Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang (1997) declines to endorse the "iota" derivation: Chronologically, the match is not perfect, since the first "not care a hooter" that Elephind reports is considerably older than the first "not care an iota." newspapers of " not care an iota" (from as early as March 28, 1867), " not give an iota" (from as early as November 25, 1854), and " not worth an iota" (from as early as January 31, 1874). Searches of the Elephind newspaper database turn up multiple instances in U.S. If Barrère & Leland is correct that "not care an iota" was commonly used in New England in the late eighteenth century in a similar manner to "not care a hooter," it seems to me that it offers a strong circumstantial boost to the hooter-as-corrupted- iota argument. Bartlett conjectures that it is a corruption of iota, which is also commonly used in New England in a similar manner.Īh, Billy, you and your sword-cane can't do a hooter among the girls, fine as you think yourself.- Philadelphia Comic Newspaper. How could the phonological leap from "iota" to "hooter" take place? Is this a strong case of folk etymology? Was there a sufficient phonological proximity historically?ĭictionary coverage of 'hooter' and 'hoot' in the sense of 'minuscule amount'Įtymology Online cites the entry for hooter in John Bartlett, Dictionary of Americanisms, fourth edition (1877), but the entry first appears in the second edition of Dictionary of Americanisms (1859): How could "iota" become "hooter"? The explanation above sounds logical, but not quite phono-logical. (Vaguely, I used to think that I don't give a hoot had to do with hooting as the sound, but admittedly that does not make much sense, either.) Unlike "hooter", which does not seem at all to be self-explanatory as a measurement of anything. Now " iota", of course, is a plausible metaphor for a smallest amount of particle. Common in New York in such phrases as "I don't care a hooter for him." "This note ain't worth a hooter." ![]() "Ye know all this rumpus wont do nobuddy a hoot o' good-not a hoot." "A dod blasted ole fool!" answered the captain, who, till now, had been merely an amused on-looker. Slang sense of "smallest amount or particle" (the hoot you don't give when you don't care) is from 1891. On the "hoot" that we do not give, Etymonline has this to say: We say we do not give a hoot or care a hoot when we do not care very much or at all. Learn more in the guide to Basic commands for WSL. We have not really done many activities with lowercase letters yet. I wrote the capital letters on one side, and the matching lowercase letters on the other side. I made 26 strips and wrote one letter of the alphabet on each strip. The Velcro just makes it reusable – and an independent activity for my little guy too. We have made thousands of paper chains with tape. Of course, the Velcro is completely unnecessary to make regular paper chain. ![]() It’s kind of tricky to put into words, but should make sense as soon as you round the paper strip into a circle. I placed one piece of the Velcro on one end of the paper, and the other on the opposite end and opposite side of the paper. To make these reusable alphabet paper chains I simply cut thin strips of construction paper and placed Velcro on the ends. How to learn the alphabet with a paper chain and make it reusable: Though now that we have reusable paper chain links he will likely move past his fascination tomorrow. I was curious on what the game actually was so I asked my son, about the game. Usually he plays with friends and seems to enjoy the game as parent I decided to see what the game was about. I’ve been watching my son play this game for the past few months. Do not bother, it is nothing but a nightmare. The game is also advertised for kids but it is way too difficult for the average child younger than 16 to play. The game is built to enable to neighbor to win at pretty much all costs. Running away from the neighbor? Well that’s too bad because even though you were a good 30 feet in front of them, the game glitches and allows them to grab you as if you were right in front of them. Play as a Brave and unlock the ability to escape from the neighbor, ah that too bad because there’s a bug that makes it just well not work. Want to shoot the neighbor as your only means of escape? You get one shot in a toy rifle and 90% of the time you hit them, it just doesn’t count. If you like endless glitches and bugs and a player base that’s out to sabotage teammates, this is the game for you! Not only does the game heavily favor the neighbor in aspects of being able to easily win a game when it’s 1 v 5, but the small ways in which you can fight back or escape as a kid are bugged beyond belief. When buying this "Secret Club" subscription you get access to all characters without having to play the game like every other normal player, one more daily task (complete daily tasks to get coupons which you can use in the in-game shop, default tasks is 3), and some coupons. The mobile version has a "Secret Club" subscription where you can choose to be billed every 1 month ($2.99) or 6 months ($11.99). There is another option to unlock these characters that is a waste of money, and it's basically P2W (pay to win). The only free version of the game is the mobile version, and they locked all of the characters behind coins that you have to play matches to get. The developers also removed crossplay when they updated the other versions of the game, and it doesn't crossplay with steam or Xbox. On the topic of updates, the mobile version hasn't even been updated once after it's been released, and it's an older version of the game. They almost never update the Xbox version of the game, and if they do they break something in every update. I'm talking about the steam version, don't even get me started on the Xbox version. You can see this just by looking at some YouTubers who made videos on the game during the alphas/betas of the game when they were given free access by the developers, and they don't make any videos on the game anymore. The game isn't even good for YouTube content. The mobile version has the most players, and it's the only free version of the game. This just shows that no one really wants to buy the game anymore. The steam version is dead, with 1.5k players being the most ever seen in the game, and that was during the free weekend. The developers are doing the complete opposite of giving kids more power, adding cooldowns on some kids' skills. Some of the kids are too overpowered, and there is 2 characters that have a similar/same skill. They don't even try to fix the big bugs, only the small bugs no one cares about. The developers don't know how to make a good game, the only thing they do is make the game worse in every update. The game is a mess of bugs, and the neighbor is overpowered. 4/2/2023 0 Comments Limbo playdead![]() Dead bodies, turning cogs, hungry birds, gravity switches, and dangerous boulders each reveal themselves as greater figures in seemingly simple puzzles, and their respective moments will last in gaming's lexicon for a long time, ranking with the head-scratching likes of Metal Gear Solid, Shadow of the Colossus, and Portal. Anyone who has played the puzzle game Braid will be tempted to compare the two games, but LIMBO skips such puzzle gimmicks, instead forcing players to consider every bit of the sparse environment as a means of progression. Every "a-ha!" moment is a spoiler in the making. Players are limited to running, jumping, and grabbing certain objects, which makes the ingenuity of Playdead Studios' puzzles so striking. Other than occasional tones and background effects, the sounds are as simple as the boy's feet plodding along grass, dirt, and hard metal, and the sound direction turns out far more colorful and organic than the fuzzed-out looks would lead you to believe. With no story as impetus, players immediately encounter forests, ponds, and caves (and strange foes within each), all rendered in 2-D with shimmering particle effects, as if LIMBO's entirety had been drowned in fresh, falling ash. The game opens with a child's silhouette waking in a shades-of-gray world, himself all black save his tiny, white eyes. You simply drop into LIMBO, and it forces you to find your own meaning through exploration, puzzle solving, and inhaling its lonely world along the way. Yet the Danish title is most compelling because it speaks to the struggles of living with loss, not fading away into death and it does so not with text, nor with musical cues, nor any concrete storytelling. The brief, downloadable video game for Xbox 360 appears to dwell in the afterlife-and beautifully so-with creepy inhabitants, a black-and-white aesthetic, absence of conversation, and balance of darkness and light. ![]() LIMBO, in spite of all appearances, isn't one of those games. Basically, if you enjoyed games like “Another World” (also called “Out of This World”) or perhaps the very first “Prince of Persia” on PC, then this game is for you!! There were certainly times that I felt “stuck” and I eventually “cheated” by watching bits of walkthrough videos, but it was at no fault of the developers of the game-I was really just too lazy and/or impatient to figure things out. What life awaits after death? Most forms of expression, from books and films to poetry and philosophy, have taken turns pondering on it, and the maturing world of video games is no exception. I do expect that this game has a very narrow target market. You could even use just one finger (or thumb) if you wanted to-though it’s easier to use two. In fact, I felt the controls for the iOS mobile version were nearly flawless for what the game is. I read reviews about it saying that the controls were frustrating at times but I did not experience that. I am a game developer myself and while I will acknowledge that some of the art and graphics of Limbo inspired some that in my first game “Rubberband Stan,” I never actually played Limbo. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I am! However, this is a minor annoyance rather than a game-breaker. I feel like an option to have a small directional pad in the corner of the screen would be easier. But there are times when you need to get close to harmful items to move them, but you accidentally nudge too much and end up dying. To move, you slightly drag your finger in the direction you want to move. My ONLY complaint is that the controls feel too touchy. I’ve only been playing for less than two hours, and I’m in love with the game. It’s not red blood and gore, but you definitely have moments where you say, “oh wow.” I mean like, “caught in a bear trap with blood splattering” die. Now, I don’t mean die like “oops I messed up and have to go back to try again. ![]() The difference here is that Limbo takes it one step further and let’s you die. If you’ve played Unravel, you’ll notice a lot of similarities in Limbo a cute character in an unknown world, solving puzzles to progress through the beautiful, dream-like landscape. ![]() ![]() ![]() In War in the North, you and your group of warriors (no soloing here if you don't have two friends to take control of the other two fighters, the AI will pick up the slack) must embark on a quest to (you guessed it) the North to defeat a new threat, Agandaur, one of Sauron's most deadly lieutenants. The gameplay doesn't take any real risks, as the combat is fairly simple, the RPG features are par for the course, and the story doesn't make any attempt to stand out in the backdrop of its established universe. However, even with the significant carnage and orcish dismemberment, there's something too safe in War in the North. All of the familiar trappings of the action-RPG genre are here, from shops and loot to blacksmiths that repair weakened or busted weaponry as well as some combo-based sword (and axe) play. As three warriors placed in a new story set concurrently against the events in the LOTR trilogy, War in the North adds in a brand new plot, as well as an M rating due to some pretty brutal combat. The January sales may be the best hope for this one.War in the North is an action-RPG built with a strong focus on co-op. However in short doses and with a good team, War in the North is not without its compulsive charms.īut with Skyrim – and to a lesser extent the new Zelda – keeping fantasy role-players more than happy this Christmas you wonder where War in the North can fit in. Once you finish the campaign you can play the game again with all your new gear (and harder enemies), but War in the North doesn't really warrant the effort. Yes, the action doesn't really require deep characterisation but given the source material it feels like a missed opportunity. The weak storyline is a disappointment, too. OK, the dark hues and gritty art design won't win any originality awards, but the vistas are impressive and the locations varied enough not to outstay their welcome.įamiliar locations from the books – such as Rivendell – are here, although they never offer enough depth to deter you from driving forward in the action. The game itself looks surprisingly pretty. Poorly paced save positions serve to punish and antagonise if you fail. Taming these is easier and more satisfying with a human-controlled team. ![]() This is especially true given the game's later difficulty spikes. The computer, AI, does an OK job, but the action only really comes alive when two or three gamers are teamed up. Multiplayer in all its forms is where the game works best, though. There's something special about offline multiplayer – nostalgia? a greater sense of teamwork? – which means the game's biggest fans are likely to be those who can play this way. The split-screen action is a welcome reminder that multiplayer needn't involve a modem. Because of this, offline play comes recommended. Playing online can be an issue if your team is a higher or lower level than you it will either be too hard or too easy. Multiplayer is where the game comes alive, or at least wakes from a stupor. And there are plenty of goodies to go round, even if they do lose their potency quicker than you may think. At least your character does look the part as you grab new gear and loot. Upgrading weapons and armour is mildly addictive too, although far too simplistic to become properly compulsive. It's relatively easy to forgive the repetition when you get a new shiny sword or glowing power every so often. Of course, the driving force is new loot and character progression. Run into area, slaughter orcs or troll, grab baubles and move on. One minute you're clouting your foe with a big hammer, the next you're swiping air with no obvious reason why.Īs with all games like this, the action can get repetitive. Unfortunately, collision problems crop up too often in the heat of the battle. It's gory havoc too, with dismembered limbs flying around an often bloody environment. Perhaps over-familiarity helps, but the mix of melee, range and critical strikes is exactly what you would expect and allows you to easily wreak havoc. |
